Because it's a lot easier for us animals, which don't have chloroplasts, to relate to fellow organisms lacking those suck as fungi! :)
That said, what makes you say they are "immensely more evolved"?
Because flowers and fungi? 100 meters tall plants? Coevolution with insects? Photosynthesis? I mean I love fungi but they're like super bland.
What genetic diversity will they have? Plants could be c3 c4 and cam

When talking about humans, it most definitely is. More than controversial, it's racist. On the other hand, when talking about domestic animals and various subdivisions (for example different dog breeds) it is used, so it depends in what context it is used. I think it's wonderful to have phenotypes of different species in a space game for once, makes it feel a little less human-centric.

It does not matter what word you use to describe genetic distance between two populations, the differences will still be there. Since you seem to be ok with naming said differences as phenotypes or species, are you a speciest or a phenotypist? That sounds like something that would be more controversial than being a racist doesn't it?

Don't know if it has been mentioned before, but at the start of the game, do you get to pick and chose what kind of race/specie/whatever you are? Or are you stuck with playing as humans?

You get to chose:) You design your species like in other space games and the ai species are also designed randomly so you will find differen't species in each game.

7 Playable phenotypes, where you can take presets or design your own.

Species you discover in the world are made up of 100~ fully designed species, which are assigned traits and ethics and belong to one of the 7 phenotypes, which are the groupings.

I like the Spider People (At least, I'm assuming they're spiders, they look like Spiders). I've always been a fan of Spider people since the Nerubians from WarCraft III. However, I don't know if One race is enough for me to buy this game...

The thing I'm still unclear on is the symmetrical start -- does every species start with one star system, or only the number of "players" (humans + "bots"). Do some species start with larger, multi-system nations?

Spiders or fungi, whatever they are, I'm going to play them, and I'm going to conquer the galaxy.
