Also to the mod devs, have you considered tweaking the end of wars? as it is now the king revokes every traitors lands after a war even lower crown authory...robert took away tully lands, reach, dorne, and keep it for himself, this isn't true to asoiaf lore cause westoers was a very static place, and the starks ruled for ten thousand years, tully 300, reachland 300, barathen thousands through female line, martell thousands of years, etc etc, i thnk it'd just be better to execute or geld and send to wall, and keep hostage, unless insane or some other rare conditions.

The thing is there is no way a house could remain in power for so long without being thrown out of power (or dying out in the male line). The fact that the book suggests it does either means the history of the houses is heavily falsified (something I expect for the Starks anyways), or it is simply unrealistic. The game should not limit natural dynastic change.

It's a fantasy book. Now the Starks it could be most likely just that the name Stark fits into the religion of the North in making the populace feeling more secure and legitimizing rulers to be starks, so maybe they just pull up long lost Stark relatives when new rulers came about in the north who weren't Starks really and changed their name. As for the rest, all the houses have stories of some house founder in the age of heroes but that's likely just a claim to prestige and legitimacy same as medieval houses liked to claim descent from ancient Hebrew tribes or biblical characters or rather ancient mythological characters from local legends instead. But the fact remains in the books plenty of houses were exterminated entirely after revolts. The Hollards, Darklyns, obviously the Reynes and that other one I always forget.

The Stark line, Lannister line, Targaryen line, Gardener line, Durrandon line, and probably the Arryn line (soon, if Robert Arryn dies) have all had confirmed breaks or gone extinct. The Martell family rose to prominence 1000 years ago and is a cognatic line which will never break because both men and women can continue the name. The Starks have had their line replaced by a bastard of the King Beyond the Wall, the Lannisters married matrilineally with Andals, the Targaryen line passes through a woman once and may pass through a bastard at Daeron the Good (such was the rumour), the Gardeners and Durrandons are obviously dead with cadet branches now ruling. Since House Tully is a recent prominent family and House Greyjoy is a family in a much different culture, I think we can say that all the families have had some kind of realistic break in them. The names are just so important that somebody will adopt them again for the prestige. What we know, at least, is that neither the Starks nor the Lannisters are related down the male line to Bran the Builder or Lann the Clever respectively. I don't know much about the minor houses, but I expect that a lot of them have changed or been subject to impostors taking control of the line (which is pretty much what happened in some Asian courts, where the monarchy was seen a godlike, such as in Japan).

Hey! I'm gonna be a bit bothersome and ask if there's been word about whereabouts when the next UPDATE (not Essos, just the next patch or whatever you want to call it) will be out?
Cuz me and a friend are in a pretty awesome multiplayer game and I want to know if there's a risk of an update that is incompatible with savegames and if so, when it might come so that we can "prepare", i.e. play the shit out of the game now so that we reach our goals :p

2014 looks like a good estimation.

Why? Are you suggesting nothing else will be added (besides patch compatibility) until Essos is ready?

There are a couple DLCs coming out in August, which will probably have a patch to the main game with them. That may require a new patch for compatibility. Whether it breaks save games or not? Since we don't know what will be in the DLCs, much less the patch, it's hard to say.

you're right, there should be natural dynastic change, but what we're seeing now is unnatural dynastic change in contrast to canon lore of asoiaf, and it is weird that a dynasty manages to maintain itself so long, luckily it is a wolrd where seasons make no sensse, dragons exist, magic, so we do not need to follow a "realistic" path of dynastic change, but instead asoiaf path of dynastic change, currently thats not what we have, i see lord paramonts replaced every 20 years or so?

edit: and again you're exactly right, the starks did die out in the male line, if you look into the lore you'll discover alot.
