Another @Nikolai AAR? Subbed.

Rurik only managed to establish Novgorod in this universe. Maybe his descendants will become rivals with those other (ex)Vikings over in Kiev?
Welcome! :D

It is certainly a goal. :)

Jarl Helgi “the Seer” of Holmgardr (r. 874-877)

King Helgi “the Seer of Gardariki (r. 875-877)

1715722319989.png

  • Another short reign
  • Important due to creating the kingdom of Gardariki in 875. Did so after reuniting his lands lost to his half-brother. Attached the map the professor gave us.
1715722310901.png

  • Contrary to that of his vassals and father, not of Åsatru religion, but Slovianskan. Can’t have made him popular?
  • Åsatru religion back when he dies after like two plus years of pneumonia.
  • Heir is only six years old, in for trouble with the regency, I bet.
  • Funnily enough, his heir was his deposed half-brother. Karma.

Gosh, your monarchs seem to burn brightly but briefly before their flames are snuffed out. I hope you get a nice long-lived monarch soon to provide some stability.

My candle burns at both ends;
It will not last the night;
But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends—
It gives a lovely light!

Ironically, Helgi looks like a decent ruler if he'd lived longer. Kind of weird seeing a pagan ruler with an Orthodox cross on his heraldry, though.

Well, at least someone gives a fig about this fellow! ;)

Do they even burn brightly? More of a dim flicker so far, though I agree they are brief.

I'm reminded of the old line, "He was like a candle in the wind - not very bright and quickly snuffed out."

More broadly though I do like the notes style, the commentary on the events from the 'student' is fun and it should be an excellent way to very rapidly skim over less interesting reigns.

I do, but the longest reigning (so far!) is far off and didn’t get a simple life either. :D He reigned for over 50 years, though.

I blame Paradox for the heraldry, it’s historical, but only if things go historical Paradox. ;) I too think Helgi had potential!

Now you made me hungry.
I groan at some of your puns, but I'm here for this one! :D
Puns are great! :D

So, so flickery. But, later! :D

Happy you like the style, and welcome to the party!

Leaders may come and go, so long as the land grabbing can continue. So was the war for Vepsia still just the reconsolidation of the realm, or a new venture not yet won when Helgi breathed his last?

It was land divided up when Rurik died, to his youngest son. :)

These early reigns are very short.

Why is he known as "the Seer"? What futures did he see? Or does the title originate from his wisdom?

Are the provinces (not the rulers/vassals) Slovianskan? Slovianskan is Slavic faith, right? The Norse haven't been here for very long...

He had it before I started the reign, but these are given by event, so something happened before he became a jarl. :)

Our realm is multicultural and multi religious. IIRC the country at this time is part Sloviaskan, part U-something and part something else. At least the area is full of different religions.

He was actually named because of his talent at the BBQ in producing the best 'seared' steaks. That's also how he caught pneumonia, long hours outside in the cold hunched over a low fire trying to produce the perfect seared meat.

Hemingr “the Righteous” of Gardariki
King Hemingr “the Righteous” of Gardariki (r. 877-901)

1716039297184.png

  • Bad start, underage with a power hungry guardian with plenty of self-interest.
  • Guardian passes laws on behalf of the young king, one good one was increased crown authority.
  • Struggle when Hemingr becomes adult, but he wins in the end, by paying off his guardian.
  • Early adult reign goes well, gains access to the sea by beating Estonia.
  • But in 888 he gains leprosy, without an heir of his own. Naturally no kids are coming afterwards. Signs of depression. Not really weird, I'd say.
  • Several smaller wars, one big: Jarldom of Smolensk subjugated, growing the kingdom ca 50%.
  • 901: Dies of said leprosy, sister inheriting.
  • Is the line of Rurik cursed?
  • Map handed out by lecturer:

How is Garðaríki thriving when all of its kings are perishing ignominiously? Also, is his queen undead?

Yes, perhaps you can ask your professor to enlighten us about these details?
