That succession law change didn't go well, although partition wouldn't have been better.

Will the new king attack White Rus and Estonia to reunite his mother's realm? Perhaps he can form an empire eventually...

A one-eyed drunk who tried to be cunning about the succession but ultimately made it worse. I suppose by CK3 standards that probably does count as "Balanced"
Hah, yeah. Maybe. :p Remember, cursed lineage? :p
What is Norse succession? Is it drinking mead and smashing each other with clubs until one stands? Will Sonny-boy make it to age 50? Thanks for the lecture.
It's an elective law. I used it to great success in my Norway AAR years ago, but this time it failed badly. So the duchies vote on the new king IIRC how it works.
A combination of being back in KCD and your AAR is making me want to play CK3 again, but I think it's going to have to wait for right now. :D
Go for it! :D

In either case, it's either go to war, or lose it permanently. Now, if we got ourselves an empire, all we'd lose is direct control over the kingdoms... And getting strong vassals, ofc. ;)

Heh, well perhaps there is a bad student in there too? :p She was doing lots of smaller wars, so the realm actually grew a lot. Just, when she died most was lost. Estonia is covering about what you saw in the last update, give or take, plus parts of Lithuania, while White Rus is about the size of Gardarike and covers much of what is Lithuania, Pinsk and southern Gardarike in this image (from last reign, Hemingr):

I like that Lithuania is still not in Lithuania proper, well maybe it does have Vilnus, but still!

Yeah, some borders are...weird in this game as time progresses. :) Glad to have you onboard btw!

King Gnúpa “the Greedy” of Gardariki/Novgorod
King Gnúpa “the Greedy” of Gardariki/Novgorod (917-928)

  • First thing this guy does is to declare war on his brother to reclaim White Rus for Gardariki. Rich.
1716546992672.png

  • Creates for unfathomable reasons the kingdom of Bjarmaland as a Scandinavian Elective run kingdom. Cause that worked so well last time?
  • Reclaims Estonia.
  • Panics as everyone hate him and have the glorious idea to become Russian, renaming the kingdom to Novgorod. But remains Åsatru.
  • Half his reign spent battling his own subjects as Smolensk revolts with half the realm, all while Norse adventurers (the irony) invades to carve out a realm for themselves.
  • Kicks the bucket as soon as the wars are won, by a heart failure. Deposed brother takes over. Ironically enough the brother loses White Rus, which he ruled before. And Estonia. No one in Estonia likes the Rurikids.

Heh, yeah. It will get better - for some - later on. :)

Congratulations! :D Big day coming up then! :D

I would love to say yes, but I must confess I fell of Bullfilter's AARs a long time ago. With my health, I try to follow as many AARs as I can, but they are getting fewer, and Bullfilter's are on the backburner for the moment. Is he doing the same style now? This is all me trying out a new style, tbh. I've seen it used in a couple AARs, but can't remember either being Bullfilter's.

Looks like your student is starting to put some snark into her notes. Funny. :)
There have been signs before, but she did more out of this time! :)

Is it that the student is bored with these lectures and she takes few notes, or is the professor the issue? Or could it be the short lifespan of these rulers? (And should this be a multiple choice quiz?)

I'm with @The Kingmaker : more snark. If the student is bored they would definitely be very snarky.

Congrats to @Wraith11B ! Fantastic news. Stressful times but I hope you have a great wedding and fantastic reception.

Congratulations on your nuptials, @Wraith11B. I think the @Bullfilter reference is for House Rurikid. The Greedy should have done more baby-making and less warring. Thanks for the update.
Ah, I see. :) Well, totally random that I ended with them, I'm afraid.

Do you feel my updates are too short? I have made my notes around this length, but if you feel they are too short an uninformative, I would have to try to rectify that. :)

I fear the student is not a very good student and the lecturer is not very inspiring. :D

Been on other stuff for a few days, much has happened. Including in the discussion! :D
In 914 she institutes Scandinavian elective in all three owned kingdoms, ie Gardariki, Estonia, White Rus, probably with the intention not to divide the titles on her death, as per usual with titles of the time.
This backfires, as when she dies three years later only Gardariki is left with her heir. Silly.
Early succession stuff, be it in CK2 or 3, is a real handful. The whole early game is about trying to keep all the expansions together, especially in these tribal societies. Quite realistic for the time, I think.
  • Is murdered by unknown assailants in 917. Her son inherits Gardariki, with Estonia going to some random Estonian and White Rus to her second son.
haha. you gotta laugh.

Luck and management required no doubt. Primo feudal empire needed! :D

As you must do.

At least the Old Gods weren’t abandoned with the name.
Ironically enough the brother loses White Rus, which he ruled before. And Estonia.
Chuckles again.

Congratulations man! May all good things come to you both. :) Inventing a method for cold fusion and then achieving world peace while you’re at it? :D
So, this is a fan bois ATL from @Bullfilter 's work, right?
:D It’s a crazy Rurikid world so far - but I’m sure our Professor will eventually get to the point where they figure out their succession woes and then blob the world ;)

That’s all right brudder, there’s only so many hours in the day! Especially when you have so much else going on health wise, doing AARs and running the ACAs!

The Rurikid AAR started in September 2017 and is still going in its second part. And in CK2 and nothing like this brief and business like style. Enjoying it and hoping they can master the breed and rule thing soon.
I think the @Bullfilter reference is for House Rurikid.
Yes that’s what I thought too - and I never took it as a tribute (much as my ck2 experience has been dominated by the Rurikids).

PS: the length is fine, that’s the style, so long as you (as the Professor) are happy to take questions afterwards.

Your second answer helps deal with the first. If the second answer holds then, of course, the posts are just right.

As this is somehow the @Wraith11B impending nuptials congratulations thread, I must add my voice to the throng. Congratulations indeed old friend, others have wished you have a great wedding day so I will instead wish you an amazing honeymoon. ;)

On the actual AAR, I feel "Indecisive" would be a better moniker than "Greedy" for Gnúpa. In any event does not seem fated to be a well remembered monarch, any success in war more than outweighed by his poor choice of elective monarchy.

I must also agree that the length is fine, not every monarch needs (or deserves!) copious notes. I would hope the exam at the end is focused on understanding and analysis not the regurgitation of dates and facts, so as long as the student is following along the trends and big picture this level of note taking is appropriate.
