How is Garðaríki thriving when all of its kings are perishing ignominiously? Also, is his queen undead?
Surprisingly well, I'd say. Problem is the dynasty is pretty small. Else, it's multi cultural and multi religious. Makes for an unstable position. Queen is dead, thus she is made to look slightly grey. He is dead in that picture too btw, I take them after death.
Yes, perhaps you can ask your professor to enlighten us about these details?
Just ask, and I will answer as well I can. :)

I will always find "Righteous Leprosy" to be mildly amusing, particularly given how the disease was viewed at the time.

Hemgir did get closer to the bright burning candle ideal, getting a coastline and expanding the country 50% are worthy achievements but still he was dead before he was 30. On which note I agree with the student, is the line in fact cursed? Though given how few are left in the dynasty we may get a definite answer when they die out!

Yeah, leprosy was not that well regarded. :p The future is bright for the women of the dynasty, they are more than the men!

Good expansion - it’s growing pretty quickly. Any really dangerous enemies - maybe the Khazars? Ones Gardariki are avoiding tangling with at this stage? Also, how close did it get to the dynasty failing entirely, or were there enough kin around to inherit for it not to be a risk?

Long life and long reign are not Rurikid male traits. He was an old-looking 29. Who is top Rurikid male? Thanks
Not old. Leprosy. Right now there is no top Rurikid male. Next generation is all female, but there is one or two boys in the next generation again.

I am sending hostages to the main neighbors, including the Khazars. Right now all of the next generation is female, but I married all of them matrilineally, so there is a chance of enlargement over time.

The AI accepts matrilineal marriages? o_O I've only gotten the AI to accept matrilineal marriages when I was basically the most powerful ruler in Western Europe (though my title was only king, I was wealthy with a strong military, very prestigious thanks to unifying three quarters of Iberia in a single generation and single-handedly breaking the Umayyad caliphate and being the husband of the only other power of note in Iberia, Andalusia, and very pious thanks to restoring the Mozarab church and presiding over no fewer than three ecumenical councils in Toledo).

There's always loads with people to marry matrilinealy. It only means getting alliances with say 2k troops vs 10k troops.

Congrats on expanding the realm! Gardariki is doing well, despite the short reigns of its rulers...

Will this new queen live longer than her male counterparts?

Queen Skuld “the Drunkard” of Gardariki
Queen Skuld “the Drunkard” of Gardariki (r. 901-917)

  • Longest reign so far, but really not that long.
  • Dynasty short on men, but she and her brother before her married all the women matrilineally.
  • Kinda cool looking with the eye patch, something about an accident as a child.
  • Mid reign, 907, she subjugated the kingdom of Estonia, enlarging her access to the sea like a lot.
  • Really a warrior queen, almost entire reign spent at war.
  • In 914 she institutes Scandinavian elective in all three owned kingdoms, ie Gardariki, Estonia, White Rus, probably with the intention not to divide the titles on her death, as per usual with titles of the time.

  • This backfires, as when she dies three years later only Gardariki is left with her heir. Silly.
  • Is murdered by unknown assailants in 917. Her son inherits Gardariki, with Estonia going to some random Estonian and White Rus to her second son.

Yikes. A one-eyed warrior queen who is torn limb from limb by bloodthirsty peasants. CK3 sure creates some crazy stuff!

Norse succession isn't easy in CK2. Looks like the same challenges arise in CK3.

Will your professor quiz you on this material or will there be an exam? Either way, the professor's lectures seem sparse. What compelled her to stay at war for 16 years besides conquering Estonia?

Heh, well perhaps there is a bad student in there too? :p She was doing lots of smaller wars, so the realm actually grew a lot. Just, when she died most was lost. Estonia is covering about what you saw in the last update, give or take, plus parts of Lithuania, while White Rus is about the size of Gardarike and covers much of what is Lithuania, Pinsk and southern Gardarike in this image (from last reign, Hemingr):

I'd like to learn more about this student. I also think it would be hilarious if the final update was her final exam (maybe her essay?) annotated with the professor's comments and corrections.

A one-eyed drunk who tried to be cunning about the succession but ultimately made it worse. I suppose by CK3 standards that probably does count as "Balanced"

A combination of being back in KCD and your AAR is making me want to play CK3 again, but I think it's going to have to wait for right now. :D
