In that portrait his wife does look quite disappointed with him, not entirely sure I blame her. Looking at those notes the reason for his lack of nickname is apparent, he couldn't even fail in an interesting way. I think the student can rest assured very little about him will feature in the exam, expect perhaps as a "last of the direct line" type character.

Can the High Queen turn things around? It didn't go well last time, but then it rarely goes well for the Rurik' High Kings either so who knows?
Yeah, we're back to short reigns, disappointing achievements. As for the High Queen? Well, history certainly isn't promising for the future prospects...

How's the independence war going? Is Gardariki in danger of losing land (again)? If so, who's revolting?

Did you switch dynasties using the console to continue after the High Queen's death?

The Ash'ari does not have a male-only succession like CK2 Sunni? Eleven years starting at 44 is medium not good but not bad. Thanks for the update.
Succession is a law, not religion specific. :)

The independence war is close to won. :) But the fighting is still tight, it's a race against the clock. The realm is huge and it takes time to assemble the needed troops, and move them around! As for who is revolting, make note of Sweden ALWAYS being a part of almost every revolt from here on... They became a thorn in my side the moment they became mine!

I played until she died, then I got game over and the option to choose which ruler to play on as.

But here’s the kicker: His heir is his daughter. And she’s married to a guy from another dynasty and has loads of kids. All of the Pinsk dynasty. I mean, it’s still Rurikid blood in there, but it seems like the direct line is going to lose power...
Couldn’t get a matri marriage for her?

Oh, so it lets you do that? Can it be anyone at all in the world? Any other non-ruling Rurikids you could hitch onto and try to get them back in charge?

I could, but she was not supposed to be yhe heir. Things....happened without me noticing at the time.

Yes, and yes. I lose out on achievements I think, but I never bothered much with that anyways. Any ruler in the world indeed. I try to follow the Gardariki/Russian empire ruler though.

The Rurikid succession has taken an interesting turn! Maybe the new dynasty will be less cursed.

King Áli, yes it is he, Áli al-Garḍariki. Strong as ten regular men definitely...not.

Ah, the vicissitudes of succession. Par for the course for our poor embattled Rurikids.
And do you believe it's over now? :D

You think? I have this sand from Sahara to sell you... :p

Áli actually is a Norse name, but yeah. :p

High Queen Signý of Gardariki (1042-1049)

  • Last ruler of her dynasty, as her kids are of Pinsk blood on the male side, Rurikid only on her side. I wonder if the true Rurikids will come back on top? There are Rurikids around, professor tells us.
  • Short reign, wins her father’s independence war, which was almost won already. And reclaims Khazaria. Now there is a topic for a future exam; the repeated reconquests of Khazaria?
  • Murdered by unknown assailants, and her son inherits. He is Muslim like his mother, but a Ruthenian by culture. And thus ends the rule of the Norse. Son even renames her title upon his ascension to the throne. She will forever be the last High Queen/King, though.

And so ends the Rurikid dynasty, not with anything interesting but with a short lived whimper. How entirely appropriate.

Given how he behaved on taking the throne I would wager a fair pile of coin that it was her son who arranged her murder, something to possibly stick on the exam "Who had motive to murder the High Queen and why?"

What's the new name for Russia?

Are there other Rurikids out there? Where do they live?

41yo and 7 years on the throne is fairly standard for this dynasty. Did she only hold empire and one county? How many Rurikids remain? What title will the Pinsk-Rurikid use? Thank you for the update.
Yes, quite the impotent situation to be in...

The Rurikids live on in their blood, but will the Pinsk blood be enough to raise them to new hights? Time will show. The real murderer's identity will forever be shrouded in mystery...

Errrm... Russia. ;) And the new ruler's title is Tsar.

There are Rurikids around. Just not the direct descendants to the High Queen's line. IIRC the kings of Gardariki (not the empire of the same name) is a Rurikid.

Wondering how you will handle this course/AAR going forward...
Will we be reviewing the reign of the new tsar? Or will we hear about these other Rurikids and how they might challenge for the throne?

New tsar it is. :)
Do I believe the struggles are over? Not by a long shot. This party is just getting started.
Hmmm...;)

Cora! So good to see you! And thanks!
Me as well. ;)
Soon it will all be revealed. ;) Well, some of it.
:( But I guess they’re still heirs of Rurik, even if the name and Norseness is past.
They are!
