Retooling five of our commercial shipyards for improved versions (freighters, colony ships, tankers, etc). The military retooling is just waiting on a few more components, such as more compact ship's power reactors.

The one exception to this, in my opinion, is dedicated Point Defense guns (eg: 10cm Lasers)... which should all be replaced with DP (Dual Purpose) guns whenever the ship's design can accomodate it.Love the new Sabres. Can't wait to take one of those for a spin!
I think keeping weapon sizes the same really simplifies updating designs. Especially retooling. So I agree, keep the really large guns for the really large new designs![]()
Enlarging the whole design to around 3,000 tons instead of 2,000 tons would allow a 50% speed increase, more fuel and life support endurance, and perhaps more repair part storage. How plausible is it to push the Sabre speed to 16,000 km/s? Asking because thinking about the Swarmlings… if they are faster than the Sabres, they invalidate the assumption of out-run, which means they could be overwhelmed.
The tenders are sized for multiples of 2,000 tons, yeah.On a metagame level, I like the Sabre VIII if it can outrun the swarmlings. The ability to dictate range is kind of critical.
However, will the size increase play havoc with the tenders?
Than I would vote Sabre VII and rush the next level of engine tech! The tenders are sized for multiples of 2,000 tons, yeah.
We have 8,000-ton hangars in the Carriers and the Airfield space stations, and 12,000-ton hangars in the Mountain class.
Instead of the Sabre VIII, one (maybe two, but likely one) more level of engine tech ought to get us above 16,000 kps.
That would be logistically most straightforward, yes.Than I would vote Sabre VII and rush the next level of engine tech!
What could also achieve this is weight reductions in other areas. Lighter armor, smaller fire controls, that kind of thing.Than I would vote Sabre VII and rush the next level of engine tech!
