Retooling five of our commercial shipyards for improved versions (freighters, colony ships, tankers, etc). The military retooling is just waiting on a few more components, such as more compact ship's power reactors.

LOL.

We've launched our first commercial Jump Tender that can handle commercial ships or stations up to 110,000 tons. It's like a re-deployable Jump Gate.

So we can now extract those Tugs and Drop Racks and Space Marines from Lalande 21185!

On the other hand...

The Gate construction at the Lalande 21185 => Lacaille 9352 jump point finishes in 11 days.

So I guess we won't need it for THAT job. It will certainly simplify any future invasions, though.

Finished that power reactor research. Updated the Sabre VII design to its production version.

Love the new Sabres. Can't wait to take one of those for a spin!

I think keeping weapon sizes the same really simplifies updating designs. Especially retooling. So I agree, keep the really large guns for the really large new designs :)

The one exception to this, in my opinion, is dedicated Point Defense guns (eg: 10cm Lasers)... which should all be replaced with DP (Dual Purpose) guns whenever the ship's design can accomodate it.

Remember that part of the definition of a dual purpose gun is that it can fire at missiles just as well as a dedicated point defense gun. It can ALSO shoot at ships.

How plausible is it to push the Sabre speed to 16,000 km/s? Asking because thinking about the Swarmlings… if they are faster than the Sabres, they invalidate the assumption of out-run, which means they could be overwhelmed.

Enlarging the whole design to around 3,000 tons instead of 2,000 tons would allow a 50% speed increase, more fuel and life support endurance, and perhaps more repair part storage.

I doubt that we could upgrade across such a tonnage gap, though. Sounds like a new design, a Bohemian Ear-Spoon or something, not a Sabre.

... that's an actual infantry weapon from the Middle Ages, by the way.

Enlarging it by +500 tons instead of by +1000 tons might still be within practical upgrade range.

2,300 tons or so should do it.

... it could use some extra fuel... although 15 billion km cruising range should be plenty, for in-system defense. Pluto is only 8 billion km away.

What do you people think? Sabre VII or Sabre VIII?

On a metagame level, I like the Sabre VIII if it can outrun the swarmlings. The ability to dictate range is kind of critical.

However, will the size increase play havoc with the tenders?

The tenders are sized for multiples of 2,000 tons, yeah.

We have 8,000-ton hangars in the Carriers and the Airfield space stations, and 12,000-ton hangars in the Mountain class.

Instead of the Sabre VIII, one (maybe two, but likely one) more level of engine tech ought to get us above 16,000 kps.

Our first Provocateur has been launched!

We can start making plans for sniffing around the two known Galapagonian (Precursor) star systems.

I'll want to upgrade our stuff to the techs we've got before starting a fight, though.

Than I would vote Sabre VII and rush the next level of engine tech!

That would be logistically most straightforward, yes.

There are other techs that can help, of course. Better armor tech makes each layer of armor less massive than it used to be. So the design can be more compact and therefore faster (for the same engine power).

Fuel Efficiency techs reduce our fuel consumption per km traveled, so we can afford to carry less fuel than before. A more compact design means a faster design.

Yeah, I'm re-tooling for Sabre VII now.

The upgrade from Sabre VI is mostly in the range and rate-of-fire. The RoF-10 instead of RoF-15 will be huge. Three shots every six rounds instead of two.

What could also achieve this is weight reductions in other areas. Lighter armor, smaller fire controls, that kind of thing.

LOL, Emued.

In fact I wonder if we could design a *smaller" version of this. How does that laser fighter design end up looking with current tech?
