Crisisman,
An excellent AAR. I really appreciate that you are going into some detail about how you came about using the tactics for this campaign. (Though I hope the AI mismanagement of its fleets can be patched in the future. Not using balanced fleets is a serious flaw on the AI's part). I look forward to your next update!

Hey Crisisman, what was the composition of your fleets? You seem to have a winning setup there.

My fleet strength/organization goal is 2 U-boat fleets of 30 each under a Grand Admiral with Sea Wolf or Superior Tactician, 4 transport fleets of 12 with Blockade Runner(2 for carrying my two marine armies and 2 for carrying f/u troops), and 2 surface fleets each with 6 CV, 6 Ships of the Line, 9 CL and 9 DD. The idea of the surface fleet is to get a balance of long/short range firepower, day/night firepower, AntiShip/AntiAir/AntiSub firepower, and to have more than the minimum number of screening vessels so that the fleet doesn't suddenly lose it's screen protection with a single DD going down.

I have experimented with other arrangements of surface groups in previous games, and have found this to be a very suitable and balanced battlegroup.

As for USA and USSR entering the war...I have no idea when/if they will. I am expecting USSR to attack in either 41 or 42 if I don't do so first. I am expecting the USA to go to war at Pearl Harbor, but with my 130 or so beligerence they could attack at any time.

Now, back to the game...

PS. I'll prepare a complete analysis of naval action(mine and ai) so everyone can get a sense of who/what is sinking who/what over the whole game.

Boy, there must be some big changes in naval stacking rules and command limits in hoi2...

Sept 1940

September 7, 1940 : Germany and Italy declared war upon Vichy France, Bulgaria and Greece. Operation Sudwind is under way. Armies begin pouring into Vichy France, Bulgaria and Greece. Troops load onto transports in Gibraltar headed to Africa. Hitler's vision is that of a great broom sweeping Anglo influence from the inland sea. Battles are quickly won in Edessa, Greece and Sofia, Bulgaria. In Sofia two full armies, one of mountaineers hammered through the Bulgarian defenses. The Bulgarians never expected such a large and skilled force to come against their obsolete defenses. In Vichy France, Panzers rolled unopposed through Chalon-sur-Saone, Bergerac and Limoges.

September 8, 1940 : Panzers parade through Châteauroux and Besancon. A battle is won in Ionnina, Greece. The last allied battlewagon, the Turkish battlecruiser TDT Yavuz(BC), formerly the German SMS Erzatz Yorck, was caught by the Atlantic Wolfpack while sailing towards the transports bound for Casablanca. A lone battlecruiser in the dark is target practice for a wolfpack. Two hours later, the Yavuz was no more.

yavuz.jpg

September 9, 1940 : Panzers continue their march through Vichy France, occupying Toulouse and Auch. We also won a battle in Larissa, Greece.

September 10, 1940 : Panzers continue advancing in Vichy France, passing through Saint-Etienne, Lyon, Nimes and Montpellier. Battles were won in Athens, Salonika. II. Mountain Army HQ has finished unloading in Casablanca.

September 12, 1940 : We won battles Agrinio, Greece and Marseille, France.

September 13, 1940 : We won a battle against France in Toulon.

September 14, 1940 : V. Mountain Corps has arrived in Mogador. VI. Mountain Corps has finished unloading in Melilla. We won battles against Bulgaria in Plovdiv, Vraca and Pleven. IV. Mountain Corps has arrived in Ceuta. We won a battle against United Kingdom in Kavala. We won battles against Greece in Patras and Kefalonia.

September 15, 1940 : We won a battle against United Kingdom in Kavala.

September 16, 1940 : VI. Mountain Corps has arrived in Villa Sanjuro. V. Mountain Corps has arrived in Agadir. Hitler is pleased to see the easy English gains being quickly retaken. The advance in Bulgarias mountain, however, is seeminly in slow motion compared to the lightning advances he has become accustomed to. The troops are steadily advancing, however, so he is pleased nonetheless.

September 18, 1940 : I. Marine Army HQ has finished unloading in Algiers. Panzers arrive in Grenoble and Nice.

September 19, 1940 : We have won the battle for Istanbul. Save for European Russia, Switzerland, Italy and a few straggling provinces in Greece and France, Europe is now united under the Reich. Hitler orders a national celebration. The blackouts common to war are lifted for the night so that all may enjoy the grand celebration. The following Day, Hitler gently reminds his people that though this is a great acheivement, victory is not yet complete. A number of powerful and ambitious nations still exist who would thwart the dream of a One World Reich. The armies will continue marching forward until all are brought low before the greatest Reich the world has ever known.

September 22, 1940 : I. Marine Army HQ has finished unloading in Tunis.

September 23, 1940 : Hitler announces the annexation of Bulgaria.

September 24, 1940 : We won a battle against United Kingdom in Izmit.

September 26, 1940 : We won a battle against United Kingdom in El Aaiún.

September 27, 1940 : I. Marine Army HQ has finished unloading in Malta. The only major Mediteranean island stronghold remaining is Crete.

Impressive. Now, you seem to be getting low on manpower, how do you expect to handle winter attrition in Russia that has been brought up in some threads already?

This thought haunts me. This is why I'm trying to get myself ready to start Barbarrosa as soon as the thaw hits. I want to try to take them down in one massive push before the next winter hits. I'm considering halting my offensives once I secure the Med just to allow my MP reserves to build up for a few months prior to Barbarrosa.

As for Portugal. I'm saving them until Japan goes to war. I can't hope to annex them without Macao and Timor. I don't want to push my TC load too high before Barbarrosa. I can actually hope to annex Vichy, Greece and Turkey.

Hmmm, a quick victory in Russia, the same mistake that Hitler made...What happens if the war is drawn out? (plan B).

Henri

Given the Crisisman performance up to date i wouldn't bet on SU resisting very well. I suspect few combined arms assaults, landings in Rostov, encirclements, etc, etc. I guess he will attack in early spring and won't stop for 7 months or so.

Question is, how far can one drive in 7 months? All the way to Sverdlovsk?

Stingray said:
Probably pretty far. Tachikaze managed to take Moscow in the press release (an older version) before winter.

That invasion started the 10th of May '41 and by the 8th of October, I had reached the situation below.

Eastern Front 0810-41

And yes, this was with the Press Beta which I've been told was made September/October so I definitely hope the AI has been improved since then. ;)

Good AAR so far.

I am sure you will win against Russia with no problem. BUT, but I hope you do run into problems. Just to add some different kind of flavor to your AAR. Would be just a little ironic when you hope for a quick victory and you end up like Hitler.

Oh well, good luck.

I've been reading your AAR for a while, and I really like it.
Even though I think you'll beat the Russians, it would be more interesting if you actually lost against them. This could actually happen, specially since you only have a 250 man reserve.

Oct 1940 - to Suez

October 1, 1940 : Panzers arrived in Izmit and Izmir. Marines finish their landing in Crete. Greece is formally annexed by Germany.

crete.jpg

October 2, 1940 : The retreating Greek navy was caught fleeing Crete. We sank 1. Metafero Naftiko(TP), BEN Georgios Averoff(CL), BEN Helle(CL). The West African advance reaches El Aaiun.

October 4, 1940 : We won a battle in Ankara. The French CV Bearn was finally caught by the Atlantic Wolfpack in the Canary Approach and sunk, along with the light cruiser La Galissonniere.

October 6, 1940 : Marines unload in Beirut, Aleppo, Tripoli(Lebanon), and Gaziantep.

October 8, 1940 : I. Panzer Army HQ has arrived in Karabük.

October 9, 1940 : II. Marine Corps has finished unloading in Tel Aviv.

October 11, 1940 : III. Panzer Corps has arrived in Antalya. II. Marine Corps has arrived in Jerusalem.

October 14, 1940 : III. Marine Corps has arrived in Damascus. Hitler formally annexes Vichy France. President Roosevelt makes a campaign speech in which he refers to "the lessons learned from nations who deal with devils." Though the USA has only partially geared up for war, this comment makes Hitler wonder how far from intervention the USA truly is. Also on this day, Marines land in Haifa and Gaza.

October 19, 1940 : I. Panzer Army HQ has arrived in Trebizond. Hitler annexes Turkey, even though UK troops still hold parts of the nation. Mopping up in Turkey will take another two weeks.

October 23, 1940 : We have lost control over La Palma to United Kingdom. Marines land in Cyprus and Suez, effectively closing the Mediteranean to all allied traffic. There are, however, a number of rogue vessels trapped within the Med. There are a series of small naval clashes over the next few weeks as these stray, trapped, vessels are caught and sunk. The Italian Navy has proved more than capable in such tasks, having given better than they have gotten during the exchanges.

October 27, 1940 : IV. Mountain Corps has arrived in Villa Cisneros.

Nov-Dec 1940

November 2, 1940 : In West Africa, Mountaineers continue their advance, arriving in Erzurum.

November 6, 1940 : USA went with Franklin D. Roosevelt (Dem.) in US. Presidential Election of 1940 - Historical Outcome. His platform shows signs of growing interventionism in the USA. Hitler believes they will eventually try to "save the world from Fascism." He hopes to be ready for any such foolishness and be done with his own campaign to save the world from Bolshevism before Roosevelt can get enough votes to do anything untoward. In Africa, German troops arrive in Bouarfa and Port-Etienne.

November 11, 1940 : IX. Army Group HQ has arrived in Amman.

November 18, 1940 : IV. Mountain Corps has arrived in Dakar. Having achieved the initial objective of the West African thrust, Hitler meets with his staff to discuss the future of Africa. With the next objectives of note lying well beyond current positions, it is agreed that a naval hopping campaign would be needed to complete the conquest of Belguim and to sieze South Africa. With manpower levels at bare minimum, Hitler does not wish a large scale operation at this time. He therefore orders the mountaineers to continue their slow and steady march through West Africa. In East Africa, Hitler orders the troops to hold at Port Said, giving Germany control of all points around the Med. It is given to Il'Duce to push the british out of Egypt and further south. Hitler does, however, authorize the continuation of the thrust into Iraq and through the entire Arabian peninsula. This will remove Yemen and Oman from the war and give Germany bases on the Indian Ocean.

It is planned that once the Russians are removed from the Black Sea, that the Kriegsmarine will divide into two fleets. One for the Atlantic and all points West. The second for the Indian Ocean and all points East. Each will have one surface fleet, one U-boat fleet, two transport groups and one marine army group.

November 23, 1940 : In a secret facility outside Berlin, a controlled nuclear chain reaction is created for the first time. It isn't much, but it is a start. Hitler is delirious with joy at the thoughts of what ungodly power this technology may bring.

November 24, 1940 : Mountaineers arrive in Bathurst, Tambacounda and Nioro du Sahel.

November 27, 1940 : Battles are won in Kirkuk and Mosul.

November 30, 1940 : 1. Pz.Gr. SS-Leibst. Adolf Hitler is deployed. Guderian is pleased to see that at least some of the new Panzer Grenadier Divisions will be in service in time for the offensive against Russia. He has long been fretting about the Infantry being unable to keep up with the Panzers. He hopes these new units will allow the Panzers to keep rolling with fewer concerns about vulnerable flanks.

December 1, 1940 : IV. Mountain Corps has arrived in Nioro du Sahel. IX. Army Group HQ has arrived in Eilat.

December 4, 1940 : KMS Siegfried and KMS Parsifal are commissioned. The KM CV strength now stands at 10 active CVL groups. 2 more are needed to reach the carrier strength goal. Production will then be switched to larger, faster, longer ranged vessels.

December 6, 1940 : We won a battle against Iraq in Karbala.

December 8, 1940 : VI. Mountain Corps has arrived in Kayes. We won a battle against Iraq in Baghdad.

December 9, 1940 : We won a battle against Iraq in Hilla.

December 13, 1940 : I. Panzer Army HQ has arrived in Samarra. Mountaineers arrive in Segou and Bamako.

December 14, 1940 : XXVI. Armeekorps has arrived in el-Arish.

December 18, 1940 : We won a battle against Iraq in Nasiriyah.

December 22, 1940 : II. Mountain Army HQ has arrived in Conakry.

December 26, 1940 : VI. Mountain Corps has arrived in Sikasso.

December 27, 1940 : We won a battle against Iraq in Najaf. Mountaineers arrive in Timbuktu.

December 29, 1940 : V. Mountain Corps has arrived in Gao.

December 30, 1940 : II. Mountain Army HQ has arrived in Freetown.

Here is a shot of the Reich on 1 Jan 1941. Also I have included 4 shots of my research.

newyear41.jpg

This first pic is of my Naval Doctrine Tree. Notice that it is completed. This is why the U-boats are doing so well. They probably have the best positioning modifiers in the world! (The last tech in this chain was completed in Dec.40)

navdoc41.jpg

The second pic is of my Air Tech progress. Notice that I am researching only those units I actually intend on building. The rest is a waste of time/money.

airtech41.jpg

The third pic is of my Land Doctrine progress. This is normal for Germany at this stage and is where most German players should be by Barbarrosa.

landdoc41.jpg

The last pic is of my Infantry Tech progress. You'll note that here my progress is more widespread. I have all the 1941 units that I need for Barbarrosa. I'm putting infantry ahead of armor (gasp) because I think my tanks are up to the task. I am currently researching Improved Medium Tank, however, and hope to have at least a couple units upgraded to that level by the time the operation begins.

inftech41.jpg

The current state of the Wehrmacht:

Heer - 300 total divisions. 60 Garrison, 150 Infantry(110 in mobile armies + 40 on coastal defense), 15 HQ, 75 assorted "assault" divisions. (Panzer, Pz.Gr., Mtn, Mar) I should be able to hit USSR with 144 divisions in 12 Army Group. [in comparison, USSR has about 200 divisions, including 30 tank]

Luftwaffe - 5200 total combat aircraft. 1600 Bf.109G, 2800 Ju-88, 800 Fw-200C. I should be able to assign about 3600 of these to Barbarossa. [the USSR fields 36 air units]

Kriegsmarine - 130 total units. 56 surface units, 36 U-boat units, 38 transports. Surface fleet range is currently 1500nm due to limits of DD range. [USA and Japan have larger fleets, but with fewer CVs]

With no reserve manpower, it is decided that in a pinch Garrison units may be cannibalized to provide manpower to the rest of the military. With 100 divisions + brigades on garrison/coastal defense duty, drawing with them 1200MP(1.2 million men!), this is a wealth of MP that we can draw on if things go sour in Russia. They would naturally be removed from the areas of lowest partisan activity first. The low MP reserves are Hitler's greatest fear going into 1941 and the war in Russia.

Good luck, I see your reserve is 35,000 men, wow.
If you somehow you do loose say an army 12 divisions, that is 120,000 men. You can't replace them. This should be interesting.
