Hi.

I was thinking about posting this. But I have nothing to lose. I upgraded my suggestion to include the whole of Austria, I know the density of locations is much higher, it can only serve as a consideration or inspiration for the developers, as I don't see a real possibility of this being in the base game. Maybe I'll make a mod later, of course if time allows.

Notes:

* The area was almost uninhabited until the beginning of the 14th century, Slovenes lived in the outskirts, such as by the river Kolpa, and the rest of the area was covered by primeval forest. In the first part of the 14th century, Counts of Ortenburg began to settle the forest with Slovenes, then in the second part of the century with Germans from Carinthia and Tyrol. Kočevje (Slo.), Gottschee (Ger.) or Gətscheab (Got.) is mentioned for the first time in 1363, and before that it was called Mahovnik (Slo.) or Mooswald (Ger.).

** In year 1365 Rudolf IV, Duke of Austria established Růdolfswerde (Ger.) or Rudolfovo pristanišče (Slo.) the locals called the place Novo Mesto (Slo.) or Neustadtl (Ger.).

Vorarlberg Feedback:
Locations are well chosen, they represent the most important entities of the area (except Vaduz was insignificant, but that's to satisfy our anachronistic desire to play Lichtenstein :p)
In terms of terrain, I'm unsure what your criteria for mountains are, but either both Bregenz and Feldkirch are mountains, or neither - both locations include peaks above 2000m. Don't let the modern flat areas of the Rhinevalley fool you - they are mostly reclaimed wetlands, back then most of the villages were above the floodplain of the Rhine on the slopes of the mountains, and agriculture was mostly 'Alpwirtschaft'.
Vaduz definetly should be mountains.
In terms of vegetation, I'm a bit unsure what the colours refer to, but I guess the lighter green is grasslands?
It's a bit hard to say how forested Vorarlberg was at that time, but Feldkirch and maybe also Bregenz might qualify as Grasslands (depending on what definition you use), but Bludenz probably should be Woodlands, if not Forest still - this is before the Germanisation of the Walgau, the settling of the Walser, and the heyday of silver mining is yet to come in the next 200 years, the population is very low in these valleys.
Speaking of silver, there was a rather important silver mine in the Montafon valley (the southern bit of Vorarlberg, belonging to the location Bludenz), maybe used since roman times, but it's peak was in the late middle ages when it came under Habsburg rule in about 50 years after the game's start. It lost it's relevance like the other alpine mines with the introduction of New World silver.
Unsure about wheat in Feldkirch, I'd have chosen Lifestock (though apparently they also produced very shit wine)

Also very relevant: Vorarlberg was still largely Romansch! My suggestions for Romansch name versions:
Bregenz - Bricantia (unsure about this one, i've taken it from an early medieval latin source, but Bregenz was germanized much earlier than the rest, and I couldn't find a Romansch name for it, maybe the original latin 'Brigantium' is also good)
Feldkirch - Vinomna
Vaduz - Faduzes
Sonnenberg - Vutruschauna
Bludenz - Montavon

There was also a Montfort line, the Werdenberg-Vaduz branch, which was created in 1342.
This was some encouragement to me that Vaduz should be a location.

Here is how I would personally divide the different provinces and areas of Switzerland as a Swiss.

Provinces :

Suisse Provinces.png

Green = Léman

Yellow = Pays des Trois-Lacs / Trois-Lacs / Massif du Jura

You can also reverse Yverdon and Gruyères if you want to follow today's administrative borders and call Léman "Vaud"

Blue = Valais / Wallis

Red = Bern

Purple = Basel / Aargau / Nordwestschweiz

Orange = Waldstätte / Zentralschweiz

Gray = Nordostschweiz

Pink = Graubünden

Light green = Ticino

Areas :

Blue = Romandie / Western Switzerland (14 locations)

Red = Western Switzerland / Central Switzerland (16 locations)

Yellow = Eastern Switzerland (17 locations)

These area groupings (like the one Paradox uses, and in fact same as the austrian areas) seem too anachronistic to me. I'm unsure how I would group the Romandie as I don't know enough about it's history, but these groupings seem to modern for me too.
At the time (and for at least the first half of the time-span of PC) Switzerland did refer mostly to what we know call "Central Switzerland - the "8 alte Orte", and as such I think should be named that, just Switzerland.
"Eastern Switzerland" was mostly called Raetia (with many adventurous spelling variations of course) - usually also including what we now call Vorarlberg, St Gallen and sometimes also part of the Lake Constance region more broadly.
Including Ticino in Switzerland is entirely modern, it was then considered part of Lombardy.

Honestly I agree with most of what you said. I just wanted to "improve" the borders the dev shared because I'm not fond of it. Like what is happening with this weird Neuchâtel province ???
I still think the rest of Switzerland was pretty good however even though it still feel very anachronistic as you said

Germany is already full of quite big areas. Perhaps just Switzerland(Raetia) area is enough? Except Ticino

Second idea is something based on this
1741729744955.png

Making two areas. Transjurana (only green parts) and the remaining part that can be called whatever.

I also did a less radical (compared to the dev map) proposal, what do you think about that one?

I've read the suggestions and I tried to improve my map from yesterday. What do you think ?

The blue areas is Transjurane, the red one is Raetia (including Voralberg). Ticino is part of the Lombardy area.

I tried to make these provinces stick less to today's administrative borders.

1 : Léman 2 : Trois-Lacs 3 : Valais 4 : Bern 5 : Basel 6 : Switzerland 7 : I don't really know (Alemania ?) 8 : Voralberg 9 : Graubünden 10 : Ticino

I can't say about such density of provinces in Austria, of course it looks very good but I doubt that we will get such beauty... But more detailed Swiss cantons and more cities around the Alps I fully support.

I also notice that the developement in Altena is pretty low, lower even than Dortmund, and while I agree that Altena would be not all that developed and important, in the same location there would be the town of Iserlohn, which was the place with Iron and Iron Industry. It was richer and more developed than Dortmund for a very long time, up to the later half of the 19th century.
Also, coal would make much sense in Bochum as well, more than sturdy grains.

Why did you rename the polish locations controlled by germans to polish for example danzig to gdańsk but not stettin to szczecin
Maybe because in Gdansk the dominant culture is Polish (Kashubian), while in Stettin it is German (Markish)?

I agree!
When I made my raw materials suggestion post, the locations in the western Ruhr area were Essen and Dortmund. There are records of coal production and consumption in the middle ages all over the western Ruhr area, including from cities such as Dortmund, Essen, Werden and Duisburg.

The locations here have changed: Dortmund was split into Bochum and Dortmund. Coal as a raw material would apply to both, and while there might be a desire to vary the raw materials in the area, coal really is by far the most important here.
On the other hand, this area north of the Ruhr was fairly agriculturally productive thanks to the fertile loess soil (the area is generally named Hellweg Börde, after the old salt trading road), so that should be represented with at least a few grain producing locations.

I have to say, I don't like how this agricultural region is portrayed on the map: Dortmund, Soest and Büren are farmland, but Hamm and Lippstadt in between are not. They all have the same type of soil and it's not like Büren was more developed than the Unna/Hamm location (a lot less in fact). I'd say it should be Dortmund, Hamm and Soest with farmland.

Current setup:

1743967293109.png

Soil suitability for farming map, obviously the fertile farmland is disrupted by modern city sprawl:

One thing that stands out to me is the shape of Bochum, following the shape of the County of Mark, extending almost all the way down to Wuppertal (which didn't exist before the 20th century) and Lüdenscheid, including both the fertile coal producing lowland on the Ruhr, and the very different geography south of the Ruhr.
From a geographical perspective, it would look a lot nicer if Essen - Bochum - Dortmund - Hamm - Soest- Lippstadt were just a fairly uniform strip of land, but historical political borders have to be taken into account of course.

My map of the dataset of cities with more than 1000 population in 1300 shows the urbanization east of the Rhine and along the Ruhr:
1743972690882.png

Most of these cities are in the Duchy of Berg, Düsseldorf location, but the small dot further east south of the Ruhr is Iserlohn which is currently part of Altena.

It looks like the western part of Mark, with Bochum and Hagen, was acquired later and used to belong to Cologne, like this:
1743970575997.png

So that's probably why the location looks like that? But this is all part of Mark on the map at the start so I don't think it matters that much.

Here's my suggestion, with no new location and just a little bit of redrawing! Adding Iserlohn to the Hamm location, and matching farmland to the highest developed locations at the time (Dortmund, Soest, Hamm+Unna+Iserlohn, Düsseldorf+Mettmann+Velbert+Elberfeld+Wülfrath):
1743973268979.png

That would result in a clear split between the more urbanized Ruhr locations and the Sauerland to the south, which makes assigning the locations to provinces very easy too. The only little annoyance is Arnsberg (Sauerland) also reaching up to Werl (Soest Börde).
You can even see the "border" to the Sauerland (and Bergisches Land in the case of Remscheid) on a satellite map which would be matched by these location borders:
1743971980332.png

Oh and for raw materials, I'd say coal for Essen, Bochum and Dortmund, salt for Soest, wheat for Hamm and sturdy grains for Lippstadt.
