Tinto Maps #4 - 31th of May 2024 - Poland, Ruthenia, Baltic

Hello everyone, and welcome to the fourth Tinto Maps! The feedback that we've received so far has been great, and there will be news soon regarding the map fixes that we've already done.

This week we are showing you Poland, Lithuania, Ruthenia, and the Baltic region. Let’s check it with no further ado:

Countries
Countries.jpg

A bigger picture of what’s going on in this region today, as we hadn’t shown it entirely before. To the west, the Kingdom of Poland is ruled by Casimir III of the House of Piast. It is not a completely unified kingdom, as there are several powerful vassals under him, most of them also Piasts themselves.

To the east, the Duchy of Lithuania is ruled by Gediminas, who has greatly expanded the influence of the country into Russian lands (side note: Gediminas entitled himself in his diplomatic correspondence ‘king’, but was considered by the Pope ‘king or duke’, and the title of Grand Duke wouldn’t be formally adopted until later [most likely replicating the Russian title ‘Grand Prince’]. That’s why Lithuania starts as a Duchy, although it will have an event that would make it possible to adopt the dynamic country name of ‘Grand Duchy’).

To the south, the principalities of Kyiv and Galicia-Volhynia have recently fallen under foreign influence, the first ruled by Theodor, brother of Gediminas of Lithuania; and the second by Yuri II, also from the Piast dynasty.

To the north, the Teutonic and Livonian Orders, which conquered the lands of Prussia and Livonia a century ago, are at war against Poland and Lithuania, after a long-established rivalry.

Also, a side note: we will talk about Moldavia in the Tinto Maps devoted to the Carpathian region, as it’s currently in a ‘placeholder’ spot.

Diplomacy.jpg

A new map mode, the Diplomatic one! The game starts with an ongoing war between Poland, Lithuania, and their respective vassals, on one side, and the Teutonic and Livonian Orders, and Bohemia and its vassals, on the other.

Locations
Locations.jpg

Here you have the locations of Poland, Lithuania, Ruthenia, and the Baltic region. Some issues that have already been reported by our Polish coworkers are the inconsistencies in the location naming in Polish (we’ll use proper Polish letters more thoroughly), and we’ve also started to review both the Polish and Baltic locations based on the early feedback you gave us. Oh, also, the Vistula and Curonian Lagoons missing is a bug, we’ll properly re-add them while doing the map review.

Provinces
Province.jpg

Any suggestions for provincial naming are pretty welcome, as in the last DD!

Cultures
Cultures.jpg

The Baltic lands have an interesting mix of different cultures. ‘Western Baltic’ culture represents the people speaking a West Baltic language (Old Prussians, Yotvingians, Curonians, etc.), while ‘Prussian’ is the culture of the German settlers of that area; on that style, we have a ‘Baltic German’ culture in the lands of Livonia and Estonia that also got settled by German-speaking people. The divide between Polish, Ruthenian, and Aukstaitian might be too deep, so we will most likely add a bit more mixed situation in the borders between these cultures.

Religions
Religions.jpg

A region with a more interesting religious setup! Apart from the Catholic-Orthodox divide, you can also see the Romuva religion, which was a hot topic in 1337 (shall the Dukes of Lithuania convert to Catholicism, or stay Pagan?). Red stripes to the north are other Animist populations. Also, disregard the Sunni region to the southeast, as we have to review all the pops of the Pontic Steppes, as well.

Raw Goods
Raw Goods.jpg

From the distribution of the materials, maybe a couple of things might catch your eye. The first is that there’s an Amber good present on the shores of the Baltic Sea. The second is that the Tatra Mountains, in Slovakia, have a bunch of precious metals, which makes them a very interesting area to exploit and develop.

Population
Pops.jpg

Pops 2.png

The population of the region is divided into country and location views. Two notes: The total population of Estonia is not 711K people, that’s the total for its owner, Denmark. Second, we’ve read your feedback regarding the population map mode, and we’ll take a look at how to improve the visualization of the data, making it better for you.

EDIT: Markets
Markets.jpg

And that’s all for today! The region that we'll show next week is Italy! Cheers!

So I hope that I'm not to late for this information to be usefull. The HRE tinto maps shows four nations without dynasties, I thought I would have a crack at them as well.
One again this should be easier with Erwin Gatz' Die Bischöfe des Heiligen Römischen Reiches 1198 bis 1448. But it is beyong my reach, so I'm limited to open-source and university-access.

From deutsche-biographie
  • Chelmno: Otto von Reval, from an unnamen vassal family, so potentially a noble?
  • Samland: Johannes Clare, from a common family.

Other sources
  • Pomasia: Bertold von Riesenburg. Unknown. My source references Erwin Gatz, that might contain more information. wiag-vocab.adw-goe
  • Warmia: Martin Zindal. No mention is made of noble ancestry. Sadly, I found no other source than wikipedia, which references Erwin Gatz. The story is interesting, after the death of the prior bishop, Heinrich Wogenap, the Teutonic order pressured the clergy to elect Martin as bishop. However, the bishop of Riga refused to consecrate him, leaving the throne sort-of-empty for three years, until in December 1337 when the pope asked Martin to resign, and consecrated Hermann of Prague as the next bishop. He found it difficult to reign, as the Teutons and clery did not want this outside appointee, and refused access to Prussia until 1340.

Otto von Reval might also be a burgher from Reval perhaps (?).

Otto von Reval might also be a burgher from Reval perhaps (?).
It sounds reasonable, though name might also be the result of him being canon of the church in Reval. The original German text describing his genealogy is as follows: 'Aus namentl. nicht genanntem Vasallengeschlecht im damals dänisch Nordestland.', so it's far from a rich source of information. My German is not wat it used to be, but I would tend towards some minor noble or knightly family.

As a Pole, I would like to praise the fact that the cultural situation (even Rusyn is there!!!) in this region is really well presented and that the density of locations and provinces does not differ from the rest of Europe. Above I presented suggestions for new cultures and minor corrections to the area of cultural dominance. Suggests adding the following Cultures:

Poland

Add Masovian and Goral cultures. Optionally, you can divide Polish culture into: Lesser-Polish and Greater-Polish - with the possibility of uniting them into Old Polish (Old Polish can combine with Masovian culture into Polish).

Baltic & Lithuania

Delete of the Western Baltic culture and add Sudovian and Curonian cultures. While on the subject of the Balts, I believe that it should be possible to combine Aukstaitians and Samogitians into Lithuanian culture.

Ruthenia

Split of the Ruthenian culture into:
  1. White Ruthenian
  2. Red Ruthenian
  3. Kyivan Ruthenian
  4. Polesian?
White Ruthenian and Polesian can merge into Belarusian culture. Similarly, Red Ruthenian and Kyivan Ruthenian can merge into Ukrainian culture.

Provinces

View attachment 1144622

  1. It is necessary to add new provinces in Upper Silesia: Bytom, Pszczyna and Racibórz. Together with Opole, Opava and Těšín would form a new region: Upper Silesia.
  2. Zielona Góra should be a new province of Lower Silesia. Together with Głogów, Legnica and Wrocław would form a Lower Silesia region.
  3. Wizna should be rename into Łomża and Białystok should be renamed into Drohiczyn or Podlasie.
  4. Rename Kozienice into Radom and Pajęczno into Piotrków / or Piotrków Trybunalski
  5. Rename Ragnit into Memel.
  6. Rename Lipno into Dobrzyń.
  7. Rename some Greater Poland provinces: Kalisz into Konin, Koźmin into Kalisz and Kościan into Wschowa.

  13. Goral Freedom (Goral state)
  14. Rusyn Freedom (Rusyn state)
  15. Kingdom of Piast's (reunification of all Piast states)
Creating a goral culture is stupid because such a culture exists only as folklore, we have our own costumes, dialect, singing and traditions, but we are still Poles and we consider ourselves Poles in the first place, such an exception may be in the case of Silesian culture which is also actually Polish culture with own dialect. At most, Kashubian culture could find its place in the game

One note about Poland, or rather, the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth, is I hope the country is called "Poland-Lithuania" and not "Commonwealth" like in EU4 (the dynamic name "Kingdom of Commonwealth" in EU4 was not great). "Commonwealth" could be a dynamic government name, just like "Kingdom" or "Empire", so you could have the "Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth" or "Commonwealth of Poland-Lithuania", as the full dynamic name, similar to "Kingdom of England" or "Tsardom of Russia" etc etc.

If Poland-Lithuania abandons its elective monarchy system (which, the evolution of the Polish political system in EU4 was, let's call it, pretty strange, hope they do it better here), then it could be the "Polish-Lithuanian Kingdom/Empire" if it becomes an absolutist monarchy.

(maybe somewhat unrelated to the maps themselves but where else will I make this point?)

I think, that in Łęczyca (this smaller one in Łęczyca) should be Marsh as terrain. City of Łęczyca is next to Warsaw-Berlin glacial valley and between 2 rivers like Bzura and Ner (tributaries of the Vistula and Warta/Odra). Due to "wet neighborhood", it was only dry passage in this place, so it was used as one of amber routes. I heard from locals histories, that City of Łęczyca was founded to make some money from traders on this amber route.

And Poland recognized TOs claims in Pomeralia. So in-game that would be "renounce cores" Poland currently has there.
Well, they recognised the Order's ownership of it. But it's not like Poland really gave up ambition to regain it, as evidenced by the fact that they did re-annex the region a century later. I'm not sure if the idea of forcing a country to renounce its cores is really coherent. The thing that that region being a core of Poland represents is that it was inhabited by a Polish population and widely seen as an integral part of Poland. Trying to get the Polish government to "renounce" that is like telling the Polish people there to renounce their Polishness. Removing the cores should be a long process of removing the institutions, elites, and culture that tie it to Poland.

Yeah well, no clue how cores work in the game, just that we know they exist.

And officially TO had to pay war reperations for it which in the end they didn't pay. Just likr Casimir III didn't stop to title himself the owner of Pomorze Gdańskie. None of the parties holded to its promises but it was remarkably long peace treaty.

You know. It took a lot of money, conviction and 2 treaties for Casimir to renounce Silesia( of which he still had an ambition to reconquer later in his life )

Although I'm generally happy with the map of the region created by Paradox, given that I had some spare time, I thought I'd give it a try and draw a map of my own.
  • The map was created in QGIS (Gall Stereographic CRS ESRI:54016) and is fully georeferenced (if anyone is interested in a geopackage let me know and I'll share it).
  • I tried to keep original location density. Ended up with 204 locations, compared with 189 in the original map.
  • The main source that served as the frame for the map were the materials published by Polish Academy of Science as part of their project "Historical Atlas of Poland. Polish Lands of the Crown in the Second Half of the Sixteenth Century" carried over at the Institute of History (more info: HERE and HERE, this project has already mentioned a few times in this thread). Links to source materials are provided at the bottom of this post. The frame map is available HERE . Its georeferenced version can be downloaded HERE.
  • On top of reflecting changes of external country borders, my goal was to closely depict internal administrative division of the Crown (voivodeships).
  • Borders of powiats (second-level units of administrative division; a powiat is part of a larger unit - voivodeship) were followed as long as they allowed for creation of locations of reasonable size and shape.
  • The map gives a chance to recreate all changes to external western and eastern borders of PL (limited by the extent of this map, thus in the east reaching no further than Ruthenia and Podolia) that took place historically from the start of the game until end of 18th century (e.g. gaining control over area around Wałcz and Wschowa, gaining control over Lębork, Bytów, Drahim to lose it to Brandenburg mid-17th century, Siewierz, temporary control over Krzemieniec Land in Volhynia, temporary control over part of Neumark and others).
  • Haven't got enough time to cover Silesia.

Provinces.
Average number of locations per province is 5 - 6. The smallest province has 3 locations. The biggest has 9.
For sake of consistency I named provinces after their capital / most important city and avoided region names (Ermland, Masuria, Podlachia, Podolia).

Voivodeships.
Just for historical flavour. They won't have any in-game impact.

I am asking you to change the county of Zakopane to the county of Nowy Targ because Zakopane as a city was founded only in 1933 and as a village in 1578 and had no cultural or economic influence until the 20th century... Nowy Targ received city rights in 1346 from King Casimir the Great and from the very beginning it performed important local and economic functions. Fur as a raw material may be ok at the beginning of the game. After discovering America, it would be a good idea to replace fur with potatoes because it is the only thing that grew in this harsh mountainous terrain.

This.

Zakopane had no significance until rich folks from Kraków "discovered" it in the 19th century as a mountain resort.

Around the year 1500 there was virtually no settlement above 600-650 metres, mainly because the climate didn't allow for reliable cultivation of crops outside the bottom of the Dunajec valley. Potatoes being introduced allowed for the settlement line to go up to 800-900 metres, and between 1550 and 1800 one sees places consistently higher up these mountain valleys being settled, but even in the late 1600's, places like Zakopane and Poronin were more like hamlets than actual villages, with populations measured in the 10's. Around 1700, Nowy Targ would have a population of about 1000 (down from 1500-2000 right before the Swedes plundered the region during the Deluge), with market rights, a proper administrative centre, judiciary and military presence. South of Nowy Targ, towards the mountains, there were "proper villages" like Białka, Czarny- and Biały Dunajec, with populations around 100-300, and above there, there were just tiny settlements like Zakopane, Poronin, Chochołów and Jurgów with low-double digit permanent populations, no police presence, poverty, no markets or anything, and a haven for outlaws, until one would to places like Liptovsky Mikulas and Kezmarok on the Slovak (Hungarian) side, which were like the equivalent of Nowy Targ there. If anything, that region was very much a "frontier" during the late middle ages and early modern era.

Also, the populations in those regions is listed as way too high. The province listed as "Zakopane" has no more than 4 000 people around 1350. Quite possibly even fewer, around 1 500-2 000. The tens of thousands in that region is more like the population around 1800, the introduction of potatoes allowed the population to grow by a factor 20. Also, the high Carpathian provinces should have a colder climate than "continental" - subarctic would be more appropriate to reflect this.

@Pavía is the feedback still poised for this week? Seeing how tomorrow has a new dev diary, and Friday has a new map diary?

I'm afraid we won't see Feedback again this week...
Maybe tomorrow? But we'll see. I hope the devs are still somewhat 'on schedule', so to speak.

Edit: Aaah, this sucks a little. Next week then, I guess........
