Yet another spoiled aristocrat trying to defy the people's revolution. A spectre is haunting Inner Sphere —the spectre of House Liao...

Interested.
May like the mercenary and mech building aspect more than the combat. Meaby the huge mechs get to me :).
You need huge mechs in your life, you might not know it yet but you really need them.... :D

Nope, while the final product looks somewhat similar the production techniques are different. For one thing, the BBI HW: DoK cinematics are made with live actors in some scenes, and then a paint-over technique is used to emulate the style of the original HW games.

That's interesting, I had no idea live actors were used for DoK. I don't know much about art/animation, but I know what I like, and I like both of those. :D

Somewhere there is a making of the DoK cinematics video that explains how it was done. It may be part of the optional guide.

I really enjoyed the under stated style of the trailer it is something I see being appreciated more by experienced gamers and I think that is the primary target of this game. As much as a full revival of Battletech is a dream of mine and would be fabulous I would hate to see the universe watered down or simplified for the masses. Everything I have seen of this game gets me so excited that I have been rereading the novels I own.

Also as awesome as any story campaign would be I am almost hoping it leads to a open universe gameplay almost like the Mount & blade games. Imagine being able to take your merc company around to several of fthe major houses and build a reputation like the Kell Hounds or Dragoons. That would also allow for an evolving personalized story as your decisions shape the course of the IS. They could even release more story campaigns that would trigger at specified dates and conditions, allowing for massive replayability.

You can continue to play the procedurely generated missions after the campaign is over.

Okay, this is going into the Total Puerile aspect of online discussions, but this does twig recollections of a similar discussion we had back on the HBS site. Murdoque, the full group consensus (and I believe it's supported as an official point) is that any 'Mech has got fully functional washroom facilities - yeah, I'd suspect that both the video ad and the encroaching release date had a similar effect on many of us. I know the Draconis Combine doesn't really like to give breaks, but I think they'll let you do the change-and-clean-up bit before attending the state dinner.

Well they told me my soggy undergarments (diapers only for brigardiers and up) are doubling as brake shorteners AND heatsink all in one, ingenuity like this makes the triumph of the Dragon inevitable!

The Mechs actually weren't that big at one point, but seem to have somehow grown over the years.

For example, these are all Shadowhawks taken from a good thread on the subject here:

The one to the farthest right in the below picture I believe is where we are now whereas the middle one is more "classic." These are all technically 55 tons, including the tank.

'Dunno what happened - somehow 55 ton Mechs are now squishing 25 ton light tanks underfoot like me stepping on a milk carton.

Most people posting here would probably prefer the original sizes where Mechs are about 10 meters or so on average.

I think a lot of people, the artists and game makers included, don't quite 'get' the scale of 10-15 meters.

Heck, in the early books like Thunder Rift, pretty much all mechs were in the 10-12 meters range. Which isn't all that high. Just a bit less than 6 average human males in height.

Nowadays, even in MWO and such, they seem to be more like Pacific Rim mech sized monstrosities. And it's probably the fault of other Mecha based media making artists default to so much bigger seeming in art.

I also think maybe that smaller scale isn't quite enough to house the necessary equipment and armor, but . . . :)

+1

Plus, once the mechs start getting lighter and smaller, it comes into question whether even the pilot would fit lol.

I like the style, not only for what it is, but for what it isn't.
Massively overblown trailers that don't reflect actual gameplay don't interest me. I came to play, not to watch.
HBS made the only right choice, to spend their time and treasure making the game.

I have watched the Trailer a dozen times now and it is a blast. But maybe I am just a bit overhyped. :D

Buuuuut...

then comes the weight issue. Even knowing the various BT armor is high tech stuff, the structure is practically foam to be much bigger. I've seen people argue even the heights and mass shown in the more old art would be unrealistically big for as much as they weigh.

So instead, we just need to enjoy our giant stompy robots with the same turn off logic filters we enjoy for anything else.

Partly I think we Americans don't have a firm grasp on metric height and weight.

But in general BT suffers from a bad case of Sci-fi Writers Have No Sense of Scale.

Add in "Artists" along with the writers and ding ding ding. We have a winner.

(See also: GRRM's "The Wall" in the Song of Ice and Fire books. He definitely didn't think it was a Kilometer high, maybe a big castle wall in height, but not much more! And not that in his mind at all!)
