Really looking forward to a Paradox grand strategy in space, but please please not just another rip off Masters of Orion etc; please let's have something original. No cat-like warrior aliens, no pointed eared avian philosopher aliens, no orclike slave owning war aliens etc.

Personally I'd prefer it if there was no aliens at all, but that's not going to happen.

It have a mid and late game so it is not a ripoff.

Read the article now. It presents the game more favorable than the streamed conference as it goes more into details. I fail to see your point though, if you would care to clarify?

I am a bit disappointed. Not only I was hoping for a Rome/Antiquity game but when I was waiting for a cool space game, I would rather have a synth of WC Privateer and Mount&Blade-like mechanic...
Early game adventuring -> gathering companions and develop own skills -> form allies, raise armies-> kick ass of the current order ;)

I too would personally have preferred Earth colonising the galaxy and finding nothing, instead resorting to squabbling among the colonies. Aliens just seem a little overdone to me.

Sounds cool! I dig customizing stuff, so I like the idea of customizing my species and ships. I like Science Fiction as well as History, so I have no problems there. The different species having different ethics sounds interesting, it was one of the things I was looking forward to in Rune Master (the different races seeing different actions as good or evil). Looking forward to creating an Monarchist reptilian empire, with ships that take their name and appearances from snakes. With, ideally, some form of Scary Dogmatic Aliens. It'd also be cool to have some form of God Emperor-ship, or theocratic government. I want to have me a galactic inquisition (with or without the Space Pope). Regardless, I'm sure the mod scene will be able to add all kinds of cool stuff.

Maybe because I am re-reading the revelation space novels right now, but slower than light travel and epic time scales would have been pretty neat, instead of the usual FTL travel. That would offer more opportunities for evolutionary changes in different populations. Still will give it a go, used to love Masters of Orion 2 and this sounds like a modern spiritual successor (and PDS titles are always good).
That's what I'm reading at the moment too.!

In the Q&A, Doomdark said that it would be easy to mod later starts in with pre-existing empires - so it will be possible to have assymetric starts as well, they'll just need mods (at least at launch - we may get some DLC with later starts down the track?)

Indeed, if done correctly it won't take many days after release until someone has created asymetric starting scenario maps covering Star Trek, Star Wars and most other famous and known Sci-Fi settings!

It is happening.

The RPS description sounds very interesting. In particular I like the idea of each game being vastly different (though I hold out judgement as to how well that will be implemented). I've long liked the idea of procedurally generated species in a space strategy game. Hopefully their biology will have some meaningful impact on their style, rather than just appearance.

For example, a warm blooded species might require more food, but be more adaptable; a species descended from solitary carnivores might be less doplomatic than one descended from pack hunters. Stuff lick that.

So far, this sounds great. I'm looking forward to the dev diaries. I also hope it won't be 1 race/species = 1 “nation” (i.e. that there can be more than 1 nation with humans, etc. ).

Also, did they say that it will run on linux ? The specs on the steam page are only for Windows.

Not exactly hyped as we already have 1,000,007 space strategy games about now, and I'd really love a successor to EU:Rome as there aren't any games that treat that period seriously. Don't get me started on Total War: Rome II, which I love, but nobody does politics and diplomacy like PDox. My dream has always been a merger between CA's awesome and epic tactical battles and PDox's superior Diplo and general AI. I know it's not going to happen, but I'd really like to see that.

But even if that's not going to be, and even though I'm not particularly interested in the 1,000,008th 4x space game, I still know that PDox likes to make things differently and I may just end up going "hey, I have to have this one!"

Who knows.

I don't ever know which direction PDox is going to take a game in, and that's one of the things I really like about them. The ability to surprise me.

So we'll see. I wish them all the best with their new franchise, and I hope that it will be something that I haven't seen a million times before.

P.S. You're not off the hook for Rome 2.

Think what Rome II actually will be then it is released. The improvement between EUIV and Stellaris could very well be as large as the improvement between EUIII and EUIV and then if the improvement between Stellaris and Rome II is as large think how good Rome II will be then:)
