I'm a little disappointed they've gone for the MoO-esque approach of 7 different races starting in a symmetrical setup rather than a more "EU in space" style of game, with pre-established interstellar (human) civilisation split into scores if not hundreds of separate polities with very asymmetric starting positions. If PDox can live up to what the previews are saying the game will be like, it's be a great example of a MoO-esque 4x, but there are a lot of games like that out there, whereas there's nothing really like, well, a Paradox game in space.

That said, i'm still looking forward to it.

This is turning into everything I want from a sci fi grand strategy game, galactic federations, robot uprisings, varieties of travel, this could be the one game that combines the best of all the paradox titles!

Well, the RPS preview paints a hugely ambitious game. I have problems even believing it. Paradox is a talented developer, but this is huge, huge work.
But this is a huge huge dream of PI after all, is it not?

I feel like this is going to need a year's worth of expansions to get unkinked and really start clicking. Stellaris's Old Gods or Art of War, so to speak. But hey, that's par for the course.

This could be good. I hope it is good. I would not be surprised if this is one of those projects which is a huge creative and monetary risk for Paradox; It seems like it could be, as it is rather different from previous endeavours and the art assets look "premium" compared to previous games, so development costs could easily balloon.

I hope it does really well. However considering the consistent trolling from PDS about a second installment in the antique world I'll put my hopes on hold indefinately from now on. Not much point to it. Plus chances are that if this does well they will develop DLC for it for many years and once the cycle is done move onto a sequel. The devs should do what they want to do and what they believe is financially sound. The market for space strategy games is pretty huge and not even Firaxis did a big splash with their Beyond Earth, so there's a void for Stellaris to fill for certain.

protected trademarks :p

Yeah, that didn't really stop the 100000001 references in CK2. :p

The game actually sounds pretty good, I'm excited to here about internal and development mechanics and what kind of ungodly horrors we can accidentally unleash on the galaxy.

Did anyone else get a very strong CK2 vibe in the first few seconds of the music in the trailer?

And if they manage to get a 3D engine working I demand globes for all of their franchise games from hereon after. We'll finally be able to shut up all those people complaining about the projection.

  • The "impassible terrain in Clausewifz" technique
  • Duels for CK2
  • Nomad mechanics for CK2
  • Space grand strategy
I give up. There is no mod I can make that will not somehow get made as an actual game by Paradox.

(I'm joking, of course; Stellaris looks pretty interesting at first glance, and certainly different enough from CK2 that I can justify working on COTC; I just find the string of coincidences hilarious)

Master of Orion II is not that good, it have some ridiculous flaws, at its best it is a so so game in my opinion.

MOOII is only really saved by its age, by modern standard it is not good but it is very seldom judge by modern standard.

On the contrary, the flaws are a consequence of its age. Terrible AI, infinite colony sprawling, pointless micromanagment, and so on. But MoOII have something still unsurpassed: it conveys a real sense of wonder. Every tech do something cool, from artificial black holes to evolutive mutation that let you pick new traits for your race. I think Paradox should go down that route with their "deck of cards" techs.
