I just hope the ship designer has logical tradeoffs that make sense and effect the attributes of your ships.

Like do you want offense or defense, do you want range or speed, do you want payload or engines, and so on.

Do you want reasonable efficient design or... huge space wunderwaffen ships that would make the P.1000 Ratte look like an underambitious project?

Just read the RPS preview of sorts. Incredible stuff!
As I learn more about this game, more and more problems I saw prior to this announcement just disappear.

Sounds very generic as far as space 4X goes. Sure, it has the pop and internal dissent that's been lacking from the rest of them, but you need a little more than seven factions to provide proper grand strategy diplomacy. The symmetrical and random setup also disappoints me - I hardly remember the setup of the many playthroughs I've had over the years in Civ, Endless Space and the many (many) others, but I do remember that one time Sweden inherited Britain, or Switzerland was the Emperor. There might be divergent paths, but ultimately random becomes generic - everything looks like something else, yet not enough that you form any attachment to them. Civ was the only 4X to break out of that by providing clearcut countries with known faces, specialties and preferences. The EU predetermined setups not only took history but expanded on it, making each nation memorable. Who here hasn't heard of the Big Blue Blob at this point ? Or for Civ players, Gandhi's love of nukes ?

Here's to hoping, but I'm thoroughly unimpressed so far.
You eloquently wrote something that I've tried to write quite a few times in relation to Fantasy and/or Sci-Fi strategy games.

Read again. 7 large factions to start as. But many many smaller factions.
Doesn't say many smaller factions. The political map we have is pretty clear : Only four entities. Separatism is going to stink.

Let's face it, what is the difference between Cleves and Luxemburg? Cuzco and Chimu? Candar and Ramazan? Siena and Florence? Most EU4 nations are not memorable in the slightest, they just conformate to a generic template. I think seven unique alien species is indeed more uniqueness than in every other Paradox game.
Sure there's not much difference between these few. But between Cleves and Cuzco ? Ramazan and Siena ? Loads of difference there. There are a lot of starting locations for the game, and I rather like choosing my start rather than the game diverging through which minor traits I picked, which techs I uncovered, which events I got.

Just give me a second start date to skip most of the early game and I could be on board for this game I suppose. :p

The music of the trailer reminds me a bit of the German Captain Future opening. Very classy.

I really wanted Rome 2... But *man*.... If someone can *finally* beat Master of Orion 2 it's paradox! I'm actually super pumped! No game deserves to be at the top for 20 years !!! (and yes I know, they will have different strengths..)

You do realize that said map was just a sample of a "could be". There is zero indication that every map will end up in such a way.

as far as i understand it ...there are 7 playable groups but many more AI players in a game.

Master of Orion II is not that good, it have some ridiculous flaws, at its best it is a so so game in my opinion.

MOOII is only really saved by its age, by modern standard it is not good but it is very seldom judge by modern standard.
