Eh... why every space game needs this?

I really dislike it, personally. I'd much rather have a selection of finely designed ships, each of them with their role, then being able to "customize" ships (quotemarks because this often amounts to throwing as much of the newest unlocked weapon as possible).

Sins of a Solar Empire had the right idea, for me.

I fully agree. Drop ship customization, spend those man hours on robust systems that will deliver the emergent narratives that make Pdx titles great. What does it matter how my troops/ships look? Will that effect the narrative I'm engaging with? Not one lick.

So who's going to make the Star Trek mod?
Who's going to make the Star Trek//Halo/Firefly/40k/Stargate/Farscape/Cowboy Bebop/Game of Thrones/Star Wars crossover mod?

Someone will just give it time.

Maybe because I am re-reading the revelation space novels right now, but slower than light travel and epic time scales would have been pretty neat, instead of the usual FTL travel. That would offer more opportunities for evolutionary changes in different populations. Still will give it a go, used to love Masters of Orion 2 and this sounds like a modern spiritual successor (and PDS titles are always good).
There are different ways to travel:
The way that fleets move around the map is wholly different, however. There are three forms of faster-than-light travel and each species chooses one at the beginning of the game. Hyperlanes connect systems directly but those who use them are tied to the existing layout, turning the map into a series of nodes. Travelling through the warp is slower but provides freedom of movement. Wormholes require stations, constructed at the edge of systems, but allow for long jumps.
I am glad that travel is not restricted to the hyperlanes, because in a lot of 4X games this causes bottlenecking and limits the avenues of attack. With different travel systems each approach will have its advantages and disadvantages.

They said that customization will mean how ships look? Not what you can put inside of them?

Just read the RPS article, am happy that ship customization will not be central, and that combat will remain strategic. I don't care to click around, telling every bomber of my hundred ship fleet where to go and what to do.

If I spend my time and resources into making big ships with huge rail guns you can be sure that will affect the narrative. I dislike micromanaging ship blueprints in strategy games (for that I play Gratuitous Space Battles) but ship diversity is very important for me in a space strategy game. It would be incredibly awesome if we can only have partial control of ship builds depending on tech and resources, with designs emerging organically, but if we can't have that I would prefer a ship designer system that just having "scouts" "light ships" "heavy ships" and "motherships" with minimal variations

Me, I want as much ship customization as they can give me, within the limitations of engine of course.

Realistically? If they give me something comparable to 'Sword of the Stars', I will be content.

Here is a little bit of info on ship customization:
There’s also a ship designer, though it’s apparently not quite as robust as Galactic Civilizations 3. Paradox told me it’s “modular in a sense—ships have different sections where you can slot things in,” which sounds maybe a bit like FTL. I’ll wait to see it in action, though I am excited you can customize every ship down to the smallest civilian vessel.

A) Everyone having different looking ships is very important to me narrative wise.
B) A lot of the ship customization seems to be focused on the installation of ships systems and such that have actual gameplay meaning.

When I play CK2 I like that my viking warriors don't look the same as the weak Anglo-Saxons or Arabs they're pillaging.

Doesn't say many smaller factions. The political map we have is pretty clear : Only four entities. Separatism is going to stink.

Look again on this map. It's not the map of the whole galaxy. It's just a small part of the galaxy. There are four entities in this part of the galaxy. But there are more out there.

Who's going to make the Star Trek//Halo/Firefly/40k/Stargate/Farscape/Cowboy Bebop/Game of Thrones/Star Wars crossover mod?

Everyone know the Imperium of Man will slaughter all those others with the Galactic Empire and their Death Star(s) being the only ones who could even put up a fight ;)

A small portion of the galaxy that, I would note contains "The Forbidden Nebula".

This is gonna be awesome!

Leela: Uh, Professor, are we even allowed in the Forbidden Zone?
Prof. Farnsworth: Why, of course! It's just a name, like the Death Zone or the Zone of No Return. All the zones have names like that in the Galaxy of Terror.

And then someone will make a Doctor Who mod and the Daleks will come and exterminate them all!
